ABSTRACT

One of the uses of experimental design suggested in Chapter 1 was the “quantification of errors.” All of the designs we have used so far have been concerned with the determination of a factor’s functional effect on a response in a mechanistic or “fixed” sense. In addition to this fixed way of looking at the mechanism, we also set up the design to allow each of the levels of a factor to be present and in combination with the levels of all other factors. These factorial designs “cross” all the factors and levels. Table 10.1 shows a typical multilevel factorial experiment with replication. Observe how the levels of Factor 1 combine or cross with the levels of Factor 2.
