ABSTRACT

Adaptive vs. Mitigative Response Strategies for Global Warming 17

2.1.1.6 Coastal Systems and Oceans

Climate change is expected to raise the sea level. This could result in erosion of beaches and shores and altered tidal ranges. Loss of land habitat and major changes in the ecosystem would affect tourism and fishing economies. A rise in sea level would alter ocean circulation and vertical mixing and affect biological marine organisms. Small island states, such as in the Caribbean and the Pacific, where almost all human habitation and activity are in low-lying coastal areas, may not have the resources to relocate to higher areas. From an adaptive standpoint, low-lying countries, such as Holland and Bangladesh, have to cope with ocean intrusion. The Dutch have become famous for building dikes and seawalls to hold back the rising sea. This adaptation technology may have to be implemented by other coastal countries.
