ABSTRACT

Bowel-associated dermatoses±arthritis syndrome (BADAS) is a disease affecting the skin and joints, which can occur in up to 20% of patients who have had a bowel bypass procedure performed. There have also been cases reported in patients with other gastrointestinal (GI) pathology, such as inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease) or diverticulitis. The skin and joint symptoms are believed to be the result of immune complexes that are formed in the gut as a consequence of an immune response against bacterial antigens.
