ABSTRACT

Reviewing protocols involving the use of animals is one of the most important responsibilities of the IACUC. Although the format employed for this review varies across institutions, the criteria used in reviewing and approving protocols should be as consistent as possible. A thorough and up-to-date review is a particularly important consideration with regard to animal welfare issues, such as the use of non-animal model alternatives and the application of renement techniques to reduce animal pain, discomfort, and distress.
