ABSTRACT
The IACUC and AV have the responsibility to help ensure the humane care and use of animals undergoing surgery and to help ensure that individuals who perform that surgery are appropriately qualied and trained. This chapter addresses several major considerations of surgery using animals, such as anesthesia, aseptic technique, and the perioperative care associated with the conduct of survival and non-survival animal surgery in biomedical research and teaching environments.
