Abstract: Solid residues (ashes, gypsum, and chars) and semi-solid residues (tars) from coal combustion, coal gasification, and coking are discussed. Available data about their composition and volumes are presented. Coal-derived residues are in part disposed of and in

part utilized. Main applications of these residues are in geotechnical works and building materials. Disposal and utilization of coal-derived residues may have workplace and environmental impacts. Workplace exposure to fly ashes and tars may be hazardous. Negative
