ABSTRACT

The wide range of vascular types that have been described in the literature, basically six main morphologic categories can be identified. These are dotted, comma-like, linear irregular, glomerular, hairpin, and arborizing vessels. With some exceptions, dotted, comma-like, and linear irregular vessels are associated with melanocytic lesions, whereas the remaining categories are generally indicative of nonmelanocytic tumors. Vascular patterns can be monomorphous or polymorphous. Monomorphous vessels are defined as one type of vascular pattern, although the vessels’ caliber may vary. In the case of the polymorphous pattern, more than one type of vascular morphology is recognizable. Kittler proposed defining vessels using a different terminology. According to this proposal, vessels can be classified into three main morphologic types: red dots, clods, and linear vessels. The latter can be further classified into linear straight, linear looped, linear curved, linear serpentine, linear helical, and linear coiled.
