ABSTRACT
Some tumors show specific dermoscopic patterns that aid their recognition. Similiar to the terminology of vascular patterns, specific structures are at times differently named by metaphoric and descriptive language (Table 9.1 and Figures 9.1 and 9.2). 1–3 Schematic drawing of the six most common types of specific features of skin tumors. Upper left: hemangioma; upper middle: pyogenic granuloma; upper right: thick invasive melanoma; lower left: sebaceous hyperplasia; lower middle: grade II actinic keratosis; lower right: superficial basal cell carcinoma. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780429161964/298c99c6-cb7b-4820-ad2a-ea0bda8165c0/content/fig9_1.jpg"/> Dermoscopic images of the six most common types of specific features of skin tumors. Description
Metaphoric terminology
Descriptive terminology
Diagnostic significance
Round, bright red to purple-blue densely aggregated structures.
Lacunas
Red clods
Hemangioma
Bright red structureless areas with white intersections.
None (see only description)
None (see only description)
Pyogenic granuloma
Pink roundish structureless areas that usually correspond to the papillae of a papillomatous tumor. They usually contain a central linear vessel.
Milky red globules
None (see only description)
Melanoma
Short linear vessels with few ramifications that are located at the periphery of a white to yellow structureless center or a center composed of numerous angulated and densely aggregated white to yellow roundish structures. The vessels never cross the center. At times, a central pore can be seen.
Crown vessels
Linear vessels arranged in a radial arrangement around yellow or white structureless or clod pattern
Sebaceous hyperplasia
Structureless red areas intermingled by variable large roundish structures that have a targetoid appearance composed of an inner yellow opaque globule/clod and an outer white rim.
Strawberry pattern
None (see only description)
AK
Structureless red to pink to white areas surrounded by multiple bizarre brown-reddish structures.
None (see only description)
