ABSTRACT
In this Chapter we will discuss topics related to linear and nonlinear elastic wave propagation. Emphasis will be put on nonlinear wave propagation, because nonlinear phenomena are the most relevant to seismic waves and earthquakes. If the world were linear, there would be no earthquakes. Linear wave propagation will be discussed only as an approximation to the nonlinear wave processes.
