ABSTRACT

The skin is the outer most covering of the human body. It is the largest organ of the integumentary system. Trauma or injury to skin is common and it is necessary to take immediate action as early as possible to restore the functions of skin after an injury. This book chapter gives an overview about skin, its structure, and essential functions. Recent advancements in the wound care with a focus on skin substitutes and skin grafts have been presented. Advancement of polymeric substances as skin substitutes aiding the healing, acting as physical barriers, and giving other functionalities of the natural skin is also discussed.
