ABSTRACT
This is an exciting period for the statistics discipline. Fresh opportunities and new challenges are easy to spot. To a large extent, they stem from the widespread emergence of “big data,” as in astronomy and genomics, and the sweep of machine learning and data science across the traditional bow of statistics. Above the fray, it is easy to be optimistic about the future of statistics in the 21st century (see, e.g., Lohr, 2009; Kettenring, 2011; and Speed, 2014).
