ABSTRACT

No single approach will create a leader, and no other person can make you into a leader. Hard work, dedication to the field of study, and determination are the fundamentals; the rest comes as a trailer. Oftentimes, just sheer perseverance provides the impetus to the top. Many, if not most, scientists, mathematicians, and mathematical statisticians are solitary people, with difficulty and low interest in overcoming natural reticence. However, taking part in professional activities is inevitable for and important to a successful and satisfactory career. In particular, participating in a professional organization can (1) open your eyes to new ways of thinking (2) keep you on top of new developments and advances in the field, (3) help you to learn of unique experiences that you would otherwise not come upon, (4) over time provide and foster the confidence needed to participate and lead, and (5) provide actual leadership opportunities.
