ABSTRACT

Introduction e Nit-Occlud® PFO is a new patent foramen ovale closure device developed by PFM Medical AG (Figures 62.1 and 62.2). It belongs to the “Nit-Occlud family” along with an atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent ductus arteriosus closure device. All these devices carry a typical feature-they are constructed of a single nitinol wire mesh (Figure 62.2) and do not have protruding clamps. As the wire mesh is solely composed of nitinol, the device is exible and can adapt well to the septal wall. e Nit-Occlud PFO consists of a double-layer right atrial disk and a single-layer le atrial disk, reducing the amount of material by half in the le atrium to lower the thromboembolic risk. An integrated polyester membrane on the right atrial disk and a polyester membrane facing the le atrium are intended to accelerate endothelialization. e Nit-Occlud PFO is available in the following diameters: 20, 26, and 30 mm. It received CE mark in July 2010.
