ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we do not attempt to replace the valuable Handbook for Designing Roadways for the Aging Population from the US Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. We do attempt to provide insight from new research and to highlight where further guidance is needed. Some of the recommendations in the handbook are based on older research, on small numbers of studies, and often using focus group methodology. Therefore, in this chapter we briefly review standards but also focus on innovations as well as problems for which there is less consensus regarding solutions.
