ABSTRACT
Mathematical modelling has a diversity of applications and thus a range of possible approaches. Together with an outline of the contents, aims and scope of the book, this chapter provides an introduction to the cyclic nature of the modelling process, a brief description of some modelling approaches and a discussion of the wider ramifications of model application.
