ABSTRACT
Generally, the cause is unknown; some cases demonstrate patterns suggestive of multifactorial inheritances and there have been reported associations with maternal rubella and thalidomide exposure. One-third of cases have other associated abnormalities: often with first and second arch underdevelopment. Ten per cent of these are part of defined syndromes such as Treacher-Collins or Goldenhar syndrome.
