ABSTRACT

Liposuction is one of the commonest cosmetic procedures performed (also known as ‘liposculpture’). It can be used to reduce focal deposits of adipose tissue that are unresponsive to diet or exercise, but also:

• for lipomas, particularly larger ones • for Madelung’s disease (multiple symmetrical lipomatosis) with deposits of unen-

capsulated adipose tissue, generally said to be commonest in male alcoholics • as an adjunct in abdominoplasty, gynaecomastia and lymphoedema.
