ABSTRACT

It would be impossible to discuss the development of an integrative approach to oncology without recognizing the need for medical education. The demand for non-traditional medical therapies is growing rapidly, especially among those who have been diagnosed with cancer'. The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasing, in the USA and among cancer patients, with rates varying from 35o/o up to 85o/o, depending upon the definition of CAM and the population studied2-5• Cancer patients use CAM therapies with or without the knowledge or consent of their conventional provider, often because their physician has little or no experience or education concerning CAM6f. With more than 50% of cancer patients using some form of CAM, it is crucial that physicip1S have, at least, a working knowledge of these modalities so that they can more effectively communicate with their patients.
