ABSTRACT

This chapter will endeavor to place the recent interest in developing ‘‘targeted’’ treatments for cancer in a context that starts from our evolving understanding of the biology of cancer, and yet is mindful of the practicalities encountered in actually developing a drug for cancer treatment. In addition, examples of different target types will be illustrated. This chapter will therefore introduce concepts that will be illustrated in subsequent chapters of this book, directed at specific opportunities to define and exploit molecular targets in prostate cancer.
