ABSTRACT

Over the last two decades studies have demonstrated that keratinocytes are capable of producing a wide array of cytokines. These cytokines play key roles in regulating epidermal function, and increase cytokines’ participation in the pathogenesis of skin diseases. In this review we will focus on the role of the disruption of the cutaneous permeability barrier in increasing the secretion of TNF, IL-1, and IL-6, and the role of these cytokines in regulating permeability barrier homeostasis and inducing cutaneous inflammation.
