ABSTRACT

Nephrology became a recognized specialty only in the second half of 20th century. However, the foundations for the specialty were laid during the first half of the century, which saw great strides in elucidating the biochemistry, physiology, and pathophysiology of the kidney in health and disease. The further development of nephrology as a specialty is partly indebted to the creation of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) as a professional organization that would bring together investigators and practitioners interested in kidney function in heath and disease, and would foster the development of this discipline worldwide. Recognizing that physicians play a major role in the type and quality of care provided to patients with renal disease, ISN through Commission on Global Advancement of Nephrology created an Education Advisory Committee in 1999 with the goal of enhancing the quality of nephrology training programs worldwide.
