ABSTRACT

Up to 60% of women in the United States initiate breastfeeding after delivery, but only 20% continue for six months or more. Mastitis accounts for 25% of the reasons that women committed to breastfeeding discontinue doing so. Puerperal mastitis usually occurs in the second or third week postpartum. The disease develops in 5% to 30% of women committed to long-term breastfeeding.
