ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we describe the more common animal models of atherosclerosis, with specific emphasis on those in which carotid atherosclerotic lesions could be induced. Significant advances in our understanding of vascular injury or damage as well as the interactions of blood cells and lipids with the vascular wall in animal models still remain fundamental in the building of new experimental strategies with subsequent clinical application in the prevention and progression of atherosclerosis.
