ABSTRACT

The most recent classification by the World Health Organization identifies more than 120 types of brain tumors. All central nervous system (CNS) tumors are potential space-occupying lesions. As tumors grow, they can increase intracranial pressure (ICP) or produce extradural compression syndromes (if located outside the CNS). In this chapter, we will review the etiology, presentation, and treatment of increased ICP in patients with CNS tumors as well as extradural compression syndromes. We will begin with a brief discussion of ICP and the Monro-Kellie Doctrine that can be used to understand the effect of mass lesions on ICP.
