ABSTRACT

Although dopaminergic agents are considered the first line of therapy for restless legs syndrome (RLS), opioids are listed as an appropriate treatment for RLS and periodic limb movement disorder in the practice parameters of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (1). The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute working group on RLS also considers opioids to be an important therapy for RLS, and the medical advisory board of the RLS Foundation in a published algorithm for treatment lists opioids as recommended therapy for intermittent, daily, and refractory RLS (2,3).
