ABSTRACT

Iron is one of the essential micronutrients, and, as such, is required for growth, development, and normal cellular functioning. In contrast to some other micronutrients such as water-soluble vitamins, there is a significant danger of toxicity if excessive amounts of iron accumulate in the body. A finely tuned feedback control system functions to limit this excessive accumulation by limiting absorption of iron. This chapter will discuss systemic iron homeostasis, as well as specific brain metabolism.
