ABSTRACT

Visceral pain is the most common form of pain produced by disease, but the mechanisms that underlie it have been studied considerably less than those involved in nonvisceral, somatic pain. Here, we review some of the more pertinent models of abdominal and visceral pain, following a general introduction to the neuroanatomy of visceral pain and the use of animal models in pain paradigms.
