ABSTRACT

Patients may inquire as to the use of complementary therapies, when conventional medical or surgical therapies do not alleviate symptoms of visceral pain syndromes. Such alternatives are generally utilized in combination with conventional therapy, not replacing conventional treatment. The rational blending of conventional and complementary therapies has been referred to as integrative medicine. Findings from various studies and case reports provide a spectrum from high-to-low quality of evidence for the use of integrative medicine to manage pain.
