ABSTRACT

Chronic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease involving the nasal mucosa and characterized by symptoms of sneezing, itching, rhinorrhea, postnasal discharge, and congestion. Chronic rhinitis is typically classified as follows: (i) allergic rhinitis (AR), if symptoms and triggers correlate with a specific immunoglobulin (Ig)Emediated response; (ii) non-AR (NAR), if symptoms are induced by irritant triggers in the absence of specific IgE-mediated responses; and (iii) mixed rhinitis (MR), if specific IgE-mediated responses are present in conjunction with symptoms induced by both allergic and nonallergic triggers (1). NAR conditions can be further subcategorized on the basis of the presence or absence of nasal eosinophilia.
