A frequent question raised in the study of digital human modeling of teams is similar to that raised in the study of real human groups or teams: What is the value added of studying teams that cannot be achieved by studying individuals? In essence, this question addresses both the issues of appropriate unit of analysis, and emergent properties. As computer power continues to improve, it becomes increasingly possible to model behaviors at increasingly fi ne grain sizes. However, when analyzing system design or performance issues, the ability to analyze teams is not only a philosophical one, but a practical issue of effi cient evaluation, analysis, and improvement of the system at the appropriate level of investigation.
