ABSTRACT

The driver was 86-year-old George Weller, who looked very confused and disoriented according to eyewitnesses. He claimed that he could not stop the vehicle and later explained that he had accidentally put his foot on the accelerator rather than the brake pedal. It seems clear that Mr. Weller failed to apply the brake and may have actually accelerated instead, but the reason

for this confusion is still unknown. Ten people, including two young children (a 3-year-old girl and a 7-month infant boy), lost their lives that day. Many more were injured. Gloria Gonzalez, who simply wanted to buy some fruit for her children, lay among the dead.
