ABSTRACT

Noristerat is not licensed for long-term contraception, though it can be so used off-licence (p. 150),and will not be considered further here.

Subcutaneous DMPA There is interest in this different route of administration, under the skin of the abdominal wall or upper thigh. The US-marketed product is termed depo-subQ provera 104. Not yet available in the UK, it delivers a lower dose of medroxyprogesterone acetate (104 mg) than standard Depo-Provera for a similar duration of effectiveness. Work is in progress to provide it in Uniject – a one-time-use injection system that is simple, foregoes vials and syringes, and is virtually impossible to re-use. Hopefully, this could also lead to the woman being given supplies annually for self-administration.
