ABSTRACT

The indications for elbow arthroscopy continue to expand. In 1984, Caspari (1) greatly increased the indications for arthroscopy of the knee when he reported on 20 cases of arthroscopic visualization during the reduction of tibial plateau fractures. Intra-articular fractures pose an increased degree of difficulty for the orthopedic surgeon to treat and an increased morbidity to the patient with regard to long-term function and pain. When treating intra-articular fractures, arthroscopic assistance not only facilitates a more anatomic articular reduction, but it also allows identification of other associated injuries. The benefit of arthroscopic reduction is further enhanced when fracture fragments can be stabilized with percutaneous fixation techniques, limiting exposure and soft tissue dissection. Arthroscopic reduction internal fixation (ARIF) is now an accepted technique in the treatment of certain fractures about the knee, ankle, elbow, and wrist.
