ABSTRACT

With the increasing popularity of arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery throughout medicine, the need for appropriate surgical implants that complement new surgical techniques has become obvious. The earliest arthroscopic interventions were confined to the observation and debridement of pathologic lesions. Later, arthroscopic surgeons developed techniques that included both repair and fixation of tissue rather than simply removal. Broadening the surgical options in arthroscopy required the development of devices aimed to accomplish this soft tissue fixation. These efforts to expand the proven surgical options lead to the development of a wide range of devices known as suture anchors.
