ABSTRACT

The taxanes, paclitaxel and docetaxel, are some of the most effective chemotherapeutic agents, and have an important role in the treatment of breast cancer. Because taxanes are not soluble in aqueous solution, they require a vehicle to solubilize them in an injectable form. Polyoxyethylated castor oil (Cremophorw EL; CrEL) and ethanol were used as vehicles for the first clinically available formulation of paclitaxel (solvent-based paclitaxel) (1). Docetaxel uses polysorbate 80 as its vehicle (2).
