ABSTRACT
It has been suggested that the biblical dietary comparison introducing the chapter is the first clinical trial in recorded history, and its designer, Daniel, the first trialist (Fisher, 1983). In this chapter, we introduce important elements of designing a clinical trial. Specifics for design of Phase I, II, and III trials are discussed in Chapters 4, 5, and 6, respectively.
