ABSTRACT

Schizophrenia is a chronic and disabling illness, affecting about 1% of the population. Initial symptoms are most often observed in late adolescence, and the illness typically exhibits a chronic course, marked by alternating episodes of exacerbation and remission. Symptoms of schizophrenia are usually divided into positive (hallucinations, delusions), negative (lack of drive and motivation, social withdrawal, alogia), and cognitive (impairments in attention, general and working memory, semantic organization, and fluency) symptoms.
