ABSTRACT

Petroleum refining is a complex sequence of events (Gary and Handwerk, 1984) that result in the production of a variety of products (Figure 20-1). In fact, petroleum refining might be considered as a collection of individual, yet related processes that are each capable of producing effluents. Thus, as with any other industrial operation, a refinery has the potential to produce chemical waste which, if not processed correctly and in a timely manner, can become a pollutant.
