ABSTRACT
Preoperatively, patients receive an enema. Thromboprophylaxis is ensured with sequential compressive devices placed on both calves and low molecular weight heparin administered prior to surgery then daily afterwards until discharge from the hospital. A single preoperative dose of an intravenous second-generation cephalosporin is given prior to skin incision for antibiotic prophylaxis.
