Advances in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) technique and practice have enhanced procedural safety and patient outcomes. Much of this progress can be attributed to stent-based PCI techniques and pharmacological adjuncts. Yet, these important advances influence the dynamic of patient care beyond the revascularization benefits. In particular, mandatory combination antiplatelet therapy complicates the diagnostic or therapeutic management of comorbid conditions and, in an urgent setting, cardiac surgical procedures to correct complications of the PCI procedure.
