ABSTRACT

Given the two-dimensional (2-D) image represented by the following equation, an intensity fringe pattern (viz. interferogram or hologram) formed from the interference of two coherent wave-fields w1 and w2,

= + ψ = +( , ) ( , ) ( , )cos ( , ) | ( , ) ( , )|1 2 2g x y a x y b x y x y w x y w x y (4.1)

we would like to solve for the three unknowns a, b, and ψ. Each of these unknowns corresponds to a 2-D distribution or “image” with spatial coordinates (x, y). It is often just one unknown, the phase image ψ(x, y), that is of interest for interferometric applications, although the resurgent area of digital holography [1] and fingerprint demodulation [2] require all three.
