ABSTRACT

Why should issues surrounding training and instruction be any different for older adults than for other population subgroups? One possible reason is that older adults may have much less motivation to engage in new learning, thereby implying the need for different instructional strategies. As discussed in Chapters 4 and 6, motivation can be a powerful mediator of learning, and with older adults some unique factors may need to be considered that could in“uence their inclination to take on new learning challenges. Overall, however, there is not sufƒcient evidence to warrant tailoring instructional programs to older adults based on their possibly distinctive motivational proƒles.
