ABSTRACT

It’s an established fact that as people move up the ladder of success they rely more and more on their “people skills,” (i.e., ability to get along with others) than on their technical competence. Actually, people move up faster and achieve more success as they rely more heavily on skills in working with people. Several years ago, one of the University of Michigan graduate schools asked over 1100 executives which courses they felt prepared a student for business leadership. The most common response, with a rating of 71%, was business communication; the second highest rating of 64% was attributed to finance (Chapter 4).
