ABSTRACT

There are various biorenery concepts which use different feedstocks. For countries with a developed pulp and paper industry, the forest-based biorenery is seen as the most attractive option because of relatively easy conversion of existing facilities. There are two main approaches to the forest-based biorenery: thermochemical and biochemical. The rst is based on high-temperature transformation of wood biomass by means of gasication or pyrolysis. The main product of the gasication process is syngas, which can be used for production of different organic substances. In pyrolysis, there are three types of products: the gaseous fraction, pyrolysis oil, and solid residues (resins and coal). The ratio between solid, liquid, and gaseous products varies according to process conditions (Demibras 2009). In general, the products obtained by the thermochemical path are highly diversied and require sophisticated separation processes.
