ABSTRACT
I. INTRODUCTION A large number of commercially important compounds are produced by microorganisms employing a process called fermentation. Although a strictly defined fermentation process is anaerobic, many commercial fermentations are aerobic, obtaining energy for cell growth from substrate and oxidative phosphorylation. These aerobic processes, including those of cell culture, will be the focus of this chapter.
