ABSTRACT

Introduction The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), after reviewing the epidemiological studies spanning over 30 years, concluded that obesity has a causal link with various forms of cancer (Table 4.1). It is estimated that obesity-related cancer death kills one in seven men and one in five women in the United States. Similarly, in the European Union, obesity accounts for 4% of cancers in men and 7% of cancers in women. The association between obesity and various cancers is complex. Whereas obesity increases risk of most cancers, size is associated with decreased risk of premenopausal breast and lung cancer.
