ABSTRACT

This term describes the similar physiologic response that is provoked by both noninfectious and infectious insults. Systemic inflammation response syndrome (SIRS) is defined as two or more of the following conditions: (i) temperature above 38C or below 36C; (ii) heart rate greater than 90 beats/min; (iii) respiratory rate more than 20 breaths/min or a PaCO2 of less than 32mmHg; and (iv) white blood count (WBC) greater than 12,000 cells/mm3 or less than 4000 cells/mm3, or greater than 10% immature (bands) forms.
