ABSTRACT
Decision support in the clinical setting has been defined as “advice and guidance offered by information andcommunicationtechnologytoaidtheproblem-solvinganddecisionmakingofhealthcareproviders”(Greenes,2007).Clinicaldecisionsupportsystems(CDSSs)arehealthinformationsystemsthat utilizepatientdataandclinicalknowledgetogeneratepatient-specificinformationattheplaceandtime decisionsaremade.Ÿetypeofclinicalknowledgeincorporatedinacomputerizedclinicalknowledge basemightincludeguidelines,researchliterature,oroutcome-basedknowledge,orevenknowledge developedbyamachine-learningtoolthatallowscomputerstolearnfrompastexperiences.CDSSshave beenimplementedasstand-alonesystemsoradd-onstolocalelectronicmedicalrecord(EMR)systems that augment the use of EMR and improve quality of healthcare.
