ABSTRACT

This first chapter describes copper, its properties and characteristics, and where it is used, both in its pure form and as alloys. The emphasis is on materials that come into contact with human skin. This chapter provides the background for the second chapter, which gives a detailed discussion of the corrosion resistance of these materials and how that relates to their interaction with humans by sweat. Common items made of copper and copper alloys that are touched by humans every day include copper and copper-nickel coins, copper-nickel-zinc door keys, and brass door knobs, door push plates, and sink faucet handles.
