ABSTRACT

Inflammation and infection are large topics to cover in terms of the essentials required for day-to-day orthopaedic practice. Details of the virulence of microorganisms and the host response produced following an infection are beyond the scope of this chapter. However, a working knowledge of the common microorganisms causing infection in bones and joints, the common antibiotics used, and the mechanisms of action of the latter is essential. An in-depth knowledge of acute osteomyelitis and septic arthritis is invaluable and is thus covered in this chapter. Finally, a brief discussion on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and tuberculosis (TB) is also required.
